A Personal Message from The Founder
Buxton Alliance is a group of Buxton residents of all central political persuasions who believe that party politics are probably irrelevant when it comes to what Buxtonians, old and new, want for our town – and in getting things done. The massive political battle we were forced to fight in the summer of 2023 made many of us all think long and hard about Buxton’s future.
Buxton is unique; historically, architecturally and culturally. This is demonstrated by the vast numbers of vistors we welcome every year, and our local economy, here in the ‘gateway to the Peak District’ is heavily reliant on the tourist trade. Preserving and renewing our unique cultural heritage, improving public infrastructure and making our town centre a vibrant, welcoming place to be should be main goals for any administration. Over recent years, the people behind Buxton Alliance have identified a number of problems facing our town – and it is apparent that too many of our county and borough councillors are consistently failing to tackle these effectively – so we decided to do something about it ourselves.
Buxton Alliance has already demonstrated the courage to take action towards preserving, promoting and improving our town, and its successes have made us think long and hard about what else we could do – coming up with the idea of creating a brand new town council for Buxton. We think this is a first vital step towards giving the people of Buxton more control over what is happening in our town.
We have learnt what the public can do when we come together in numbers to solve problems and put pressure on local politicians to deliver what WE, the local electorate, want. We have enjoyed great local cameraderie. And all along our journey, we have been told about numerous other things the people of Buxton want to see happening in our town. Now it is time for action and we are asking YOU to help US – so that we can help you and us even better.
A town council for Buxton would provide an extra level of control over HPBC decisions, the ability to raise funding for things that local people want and need and the power to veto things we do not want happening in or to our town.
We’re not just petitioning for a brand new town council, however. We have also created a small but dedicated cross-party political group, Buxton Alliance, which we are launching fast on the petition’s heels. If our petition is successful, some of the admin team, and other local people chosen from among this group, will stand in every one of the new seats created. Free from party politics, we will be able to put what Buxton wants front and centre.
Nothing can be achieved without your support, and so we are asking you, the people of our town, to sign our petition and share it like mad on social media. Ask your friends to sign it and ask your families to sign it. We have beaten the odds together already once, and we can do it again – and help safeguard the future of our wonderful Georgian spa town!
Warm wishes, Melandra
